LEC10/16monitoring the patient Flashcards
what are five things you can look for while a patient is under ansethesia?
Occular signs, respiratory signs, cardiovascular signs, reflexes, muscle tone
what are five occular signs to look for?
eye position, movment, pupil size, palpebral reflex, corneal reflex
What do you look for with eye position?
rotated eye so it only shows the sclera. Means moderate plane
what will you look for in eye movement?
eye will move when in a light plane (normally horses)
What will you look for in pupil size?
will dialate progressively into deeper planes
what will you look for in the palpebral reflex?
eye will blink when pressed on medial canthus
what will you look for with the corneal reflex?
eye will retract or close if opthalmic solution is placed on eye or poked with blunt rod
when will corneal reflex go away?
Plane 3 of stage 3
What happens to the RR as deeper anesthesia is reached?
It will decrease
describe the character of respiration
at the beggining: thoraci/abdominal movement, then abdominal with delayed thoracic, and then only abdominal
What will happen to the CV system as anesthesia gets deeper?
it will decrease
what will happen to the BP as anesthesia goes deeper/
decreases
What will happen to the reflexes as deeper anesthesia is reached?
decrease
what will happen to relfexes in stage 3, plane two
will loose palpebral, swollowing, laryngeal, and pedal relfexes
what will happen to reflexes in stage 3, plane 3
corneal relfex lost
