LEC: Injectable anesthetics Flashcards
what are injectable anesthetics used for?
induction of general anesthesia in small and large animals
when can injectible anesthesias be used alone?
for short sx or diagnostic proceduers
what happens once anesthetics are injected?
effects will last until the anesthetics are metabolized and excreted
what are three types of injectible anesthetics?
ultra short acting barbituates
propothol
dissascosiative anesthetics
What do ultra short acting barbituates effect?
depress respiratory system
cardiovascular system
what produce excellent inductions?
ultra short acting barbituates
what are two ultra short acting barbituates?
pentobarbital (short acting)
phenobarbital (long acting)
what is phenobarbitol normally used for?
anti-siezures/anti-convulsants
How many breaths a min should you provide an animal when under injectable a esthetics?
2-4
Why should you give animals staggered breaths while under injectable an esthetics?
To prevent hypoxia but force them to breath on their own
What are three types on animals that will have a reaction to injectable anesthetics?
Hypoprotiemic
Acidotic
Lean
What is a side effect of injectable anesthetics?
Tissue irritation
What do acidotic molecules do?
They are less protien binding so they will have a greater anesthetic effect
What are three examples of acidotic animals?
Blocked cat
Animals in shock
Animals with pulmonary edema
What animal is more sensitive to USA Barbies and why?
Sight hounds because they do not have a lot of fat
What is vesicant?
Tissue irritation/blistering
