lec 31 Flashcards
is canola an edible or nonedible seed oil? what are some other examples for both groups?
canola oil is edible, along w soybean oil
nonedible oils incl camellina oil and flax oil
is saturated or unsaturated fat healthier? what element makes it so?
unsaturated are healthier, since they contain double bonds
what are some examples of healthy oils? what makes them healthy?
monosaturated fats, incl olive, avocado, and CANOLA
polysaturated, incl omega-3-fatty acids
cannot be synth by humans so they must be obtained through diet
what makes rapeseed oil bad?
erucic acid: toxic compound causing damage to the cardiac muscle tissue
glucosinolates: compound which damages the thyroid
in the 1950s, palm and soybean oils were the most popular. however, both are grown in tropical/subtropical regions, which canada is not. how do we respond?
convert rapeseed to canola! process involves getting rid of two bad things (erucic acid and glucosinolates)
to be considered canola, it must have
- < 2% erucic acid
- maximum 30 micromoles/g of glucosinates
what is canola’s species (this is actually important to know)
Brassica napus which came about as a hybrid of B. rapa and B. oleracea
there is also polish canola which is B. rapa still..
what is the most profitable crop grown in western canada
canola (think of all the canola fields)
canola is called a management responsive crop. what does this mean?
it needs to be babied - the difference bw two crops of canola, all else considered equal, is how much work was put into caring for it
what does canola management look like?
before seeding:
- check the soil’s good (good quality N, no diseases)
- prepare the right pesticides
seeding:
- use certified seeds
- seeding timing: early seeding tends to do better bc it finishes growth before peak summer heat
- seeding depth (about one to one and a half inches)
harvest (methods):
- dessication
- straight cutting
- swathing
what makes flea beetles so bad?
they feast on canola seedlings –> fuck w growth
what makes bertha armyworms so bad?
eat canola leaves, able to defoliate an entire field
what does seedling blight and root rot look like in canola? what causes it?
roots rot.. seedlings suffer.. its kinda in the name…
caused by wet soil, where pathogens thrive
what is blackleg, and how does it affect canola?
fungi that form lesions that interfere w photosynth and water transport, reducing yield
what is clubroot, and how does it affect canola?
soilborne pathogen that affects the roots; roots become swollen, interfering w water and nutrient uptake
