Jurisdiction Disputes off Reserve

  1. Present State
    - Provincial governments have a general responsibility for Aboriginal peoples living off-reserve
    - Aboriginal peoples often have to cross jurisdiction boundaries to receive healthcare- making coverage difficult
  2. Transition State
    - Advocate for Aboriginal peopel on a case by case basis
    - Get involved in government to advocate for Aboriginal inclusion and supporting Aboriginal influence
    - Creating an Aboriginal health policy
  3. Furutre State
    - Clearly define framework of jurisdiction
    - Accountability of the responsible party
    - Aboriginal authority figures and health care workers on decision making committees

Sustainable Funding for Aboriginal Healing Centers

A
  1. Present State
    - Currently in planning stages. No concrete funding yet
    - Current funding is not addressing northern communities
  2. Transition State
    - Now…approximately 2000 UofS students identify as Indigenous. We should be at 5000
    - Idea: independent Indigenous students union able to allocate resources and programming specific to Indigenous students
  3. Future State
    Indigenous people will be:
    - Autonomous, self-governing
    - Ability to allocate resources guaranteed by treaty rights

Increase Aboriginal Professional in Health Care

A
  1. Present State
    - Strategic plan for engagement
    - Scholarships
    - Guaranteed seats for health care (reserved professional college)
    - Achievement program
    - Aboriginal-based intervention programing
  2. Transition State
    - Break down stigma of western health (care exclusivity- increase rural access)
    - Increase in number of seats in colleges
    - Paid Aboriginal mentorship for new or existing Aboriginal health-care providers to practice in Reserve communities
    - Hire caring and competent teachers in high school
  3. Future State
    - Incorporate traditional medicine into educational programs
    - Mentorship in communites
    - Increase the number of Aboriginal healthcare providers
    - Inspire Aboriginal youth to embrace traditional culture and enhance education

Provide Cultural Health Competency Training for All Health-Care Professionals

A
  1. Present State
    - Education for health care professionals has a cultural component, that will aid us in future care
    - Indigenous studies requirement and incorporated in other nursing classes
  2. Future State
    - Increase the amount of culturally competent health-care professional
    - Create a safe health-care space for everyone
    - Have an increase amount of Indigenous people seek health care
  3. Transition State
    - Increase Indigenous culture education, starting at a younger age
    - Instill cultural safety as a lifestyle rather then just a job requirement
    - Increase in staff so nurses can establish better report, thus increasing their cultural competency and safety
