learning theories: observational learning Flashcards
whos theory is the observational learning theory?
Bandura’s
what does Banduras theory of observational learning state?
(practical example)
we learn by watching and copying
e.g. a hockey player must watch the demonstration of the hit before he learns it
learning takes place through what 4 processes?
attention, retention, motor reproduction and motivation
describe attention using a practical example
attention is the first process of learning
in order for an individual to be able to copy a demonstration, they must focus on the demonstration and the important cues
e.g. if a coach is showing a netball player how to shoot, the player must focus on the demonstration
what does attention impact?
what is attention affected by?
how much attention the performer pays to the demonstration will impact their ability to reproduce the skill
attention is affected by:
- how interested the performer is
- how motivated the performer is to perform the skill
describe retention using a practical example
retention is the second process of learning
the performer must remember the image of the demonstration in order to copy it
e.g. the performer must remember the image of a golf swing
what can the ability to remember the image be improved by?
using mental rehearsal
repeating the demonstration
describe motor reproduction using a practical example
motor reproduction is the third process of learning
the performer must have the physical and mental capability to be able to copy the skill
e.g. a gymnast must be physically strong enough to lift themselves on the bars
describe motivation using a practical example
what can motivation be increased by?
motivation is the fourth process of learning
the performer must have the drive to copy the skill
e.g. if a young girl sees another young girl compete a tumbling routine the girl might be motivated to copy it
can be increased by positive reinforcement
