learning theories: cognitive theory of learning Flashcards
what is the cognitive theory of learning?
learning is best achieved by presenting the whole skill to the learner in the context of a realistic situation
in order to arrive at a solution, the learner must understand and think about the problem as a whole
what is insight learning?
the learner will use:
- intelligence
- current knowledge
- and previous experience
to plan and predict a solution
a solution in the form of a response is an indication that learning has been achieved
practical example of the cognitive theory of learning:
for a smash in badminton
the coach would explain that the aim is to hit the shuttle downwards onto the floor of the opponents court so they cant hit it back
the learner would then use his intelligence and past experience to come up with the smash
exam question: describe the cognitive theory of learning. (4)
- learning is best achieved by presenting the whole skill to the learner
- learning takes place in a realistic situation
- learner must understand and think about the problem as a whole
- learner uses mental rehersal to aid learning
describe the cognitive learning theory using practical examples.
- the coach gives the learner the whole problem to solve, e.g. the dancer needs to think about the situation before working out how to perform the movement
- using past experiences to solve the problem, e.g. movements from previous tennis matches may be transferred to help the learning of a new movement
- optimising learning through positive thinking, e.g. working out an effective solution adds to the footballers experience
