what are advantages of visual guidance?
- helps the performer to create a mental image of the skill
- good for people at the cognitive stage of learning
- can enable the skill to be seen in different stages to make it easier to learn
what are disadvantages of visual guidance?
- the demonstration could be incorrect
- the demonstration may be too quick for the learner to follow
- slow motion demonstrations may be unclear
what are advantages of verbal guidance?
- feedback can be given during the performance
- effective for simple skills
- can be used to motivate the performer
what are disadvantages of verbal guidance?
- if the feedback is not accurate it can lead to errors in the performer
- can lead to information overload
- can be confusing
what are advantages of manual guidance?
- coach can correct errors
- can reduce fear
- can build confidence
what are disadvantages of manual guidance?
- performer may not like the coach touching them
- performer may become reliant on the support
what are advantages of mechanical guidance?
- increases safety
- gives confidence
- can motivate performer
what are disadvantages of mechanical guidance?
- performer can become reliant
- learner cannot correct errors for themselves
what is a practical example of visual guidance?
e.g. a coach showing a tennis player a video of someone performing a serve.
what phase of learning is visual guidance best for?
all stages but especially cognitive phase
