feedback Flashcards
what are the 6 types of feedback?
intrinsic, extrinsic, knowledge of performance, knowledge of results, positive, negative
define: intrinsic feedback
information comes from within the performer
give a practical example of intrinsic feedback
e.g. a football player feeling like the ball is going to go into the goal
define: extrinsic feedback
feedback that comes from an external source
give a practical example of extrinsic feedback
e.g. a coach telling the performer they hit the ball correctly
define: knowledge of performance
information about how well the movement was executed
give a practical example of knowledge of performance
e.g. a coach telling the tennis player that they performed the serve well
define: knowledge of results
information about the outcome
give a practical example of knowledge of results
e.g. scoring a goal in football
define: positive feedback
gives information about a successful outcome
give a practical example of positive feedback
e.g. praising a successful layup in basketball
define: negative feedback
information about an unsuccessful outcome
give a practical example of negative feedback
e.g. a coach criticising a netball player for making a poor pass
what are advantages of intrinsic feedback?
- readily available
- movements can be corrected immediately
- dont need to rely on others
what are disadvantages of intrinsic feedback?
- not useful for beginners as they dont know the true kinaesthetic feel
- might not be accurate which will lead to errors in performance
what are advantages of extrinsic feedback?
- is motivating as the performer is getting attention from the coach
- useful for beginners
- coach has time to think before giving feedback
what are disadvantages of extrinsic feedback?
- it can demotivate the performer
- feedback might not be accurate
- performer may become dependant on this type of feedback
what are advantages of knowledge of performance?
- can help to improve movement
- can increase motivation/confidence
- allows the coach to focus on positive aspects
what are disadvantages of knowledge of performance?
- can take a long time to develop kinaesthesis
- some performers might only want to know the outcome
what are advantages of knowledge of results
- important for all phases of learning
- the performer needs to know if they were successful in order to learn
- can increase confidence
what are disadvantages of knowledge of results?
- can demotivate the performer
- can only be used once the performance has been completed
what are advantages of positive feedback?
- strengthens S-R bonds
- helps builds confidence
- effective for beginners
what are disadvantages of positive feedback?
- if overused it can lead to ignoring feedback
- ineffective if unspecific
what are advantages of negative feeddback?
- it motivates some performers
- prevents drive reduction
- provides clear areas for the performer to improve on
what are disadvantages of negative feedback?
- can cause the performer to give up
- can lower self confidence
- inappropriate for beginners
