lateral medullary syndrome
PICA stroke
affects:
Sympathetics - horners syndrome on ipsilateral side
Spinocerebellar tract- cerebellar signs incl. ataxia
spinothalamic tract -loss of pain and temp on CONTRALATERAL side of body
sensory nucleus of CN5 -altered sensation (pain and temp loss) in face on ipsilateral side
medial medullary syndrome
anteiror spinal artery stroke
affects:
medullary pyramid -hemiparesis (weakness)/hemiplegia (paralysis) of whole CONTRALATERAL side
dorsal medical lemiscal pathway- loss of discriminative touch, conscious proprioception, 2 point discrimination, vibration on CONTRALATERAL side
hypoglossal nerve- deviation of tongue towards affected side (due to ipsilateral muscle weakness)
PCA stroke
affects:
visual cortex- homonymous hemianopia on contralateral side
ICA stroke
the head, upper limb and lower limb will all be screwedon the other side
MCA
contralateral weakness and loss of sensation in upper limbs and head
and aphasia
