Last - Touch receptors and 2 point touch threshold test Flashcards
Location: They are widespread, superficial, and found in hairy and hairless skin.
Functions: Light touch, temperature, and pain.
Free nerve endings
Location: A dendrite wrapped around a hair follicle.
Functions: Light touch when the hair is displaced.
Hair follicle receptors
Location: Found in the dermal papillae of hairless skin.
Functions: Light touch and low-frequency vibration.
Meissner’s corpuscles
Location: Found in the stratum basale of hairy and hairless skin.
Functions: Pressure touch
Merkel’s nerve complex
Location: In the dermis, joint capsules, some viscera, genitals, and breasts.
Functions: High frequency vibration, pressure, stretch, and tickling.
Lamellated or Pacinian corpuscles
Location: In the dermis and joint capsules.
Functions: Pressure touch
Ruffini’s cylinders
What test is used to determine sensitivity?
Two-point touch threshold test
How is the two-point threshold test conducted?
- Obtain a caliper and set the jaws 3 cm apart.
- Ask your partner to close their eyes and lightly touch your partner with the caliper.
- If your partner can feel two separate points of contact, reduce the distance between the jaws of the caliper incrementally 2 mm, until your partner feels only one point of contact.
Rank the following regions according from the least to most sensitive: fingertips, elbow, forearm, palm of hand.
Elbow -> forearm -> palm of hand -> finger tips
