Lab 5 Terms Flashcards
Diaphysis
Shaft of the bone
Epiphysis
Located on the end of the shaft, and is usually larger in diameter than the shaft
Epiphyseal plate
Joins the diaphysis to epiphysis in a growing bone
Articular cartilage
Layer of hyaline cartilage covering the epiphysis, at the point where a joint is formed with another bone
Periosteum
Type of connective tissue covering bone;
Contains blood vessels, lymphatic vessels, nerves, osteoblasts, osteoclasts, and stem cells that develop into various bone cells
Osteoblasts
Make bone
Osteoclasts
Degrade bone
Medullary or marrow cavity
Space within the diaphysis;
Contains fatty, yellow marrow in adults, which functions in fat storage
Endosteum
Connective tissue lining the marrow cavity; consists of just a single layer of bone cells
Cranial bones
There are 8; enclose and protect the brain
Facial bones
14; support and protect soft structures of the face such as eyes
What are the ear ossicles?
Malleus
Incus
Stapes
How many ear ossicles are there?
6
Hyoid bone
Found anterior to the cervical vertebrae and is not attached to any other bone;
Serves as an attachment for some of the tongue muscles, and muscles that act to raise the larynx during speech, or swallowing
Epiphyseal line
Happens when the bone stops lengthening and the epiphyseal plate closes
