What does laissez - faire mean?

A

To leave alone, an idea that the government shouldn’t interfere in the lives of the people and that they should make their own way in the world

Examples of laissez - faire in the course

A

= Any free trade ideas - Pitt and Eden Treaty, Liverpool/Peel and decrease in duties

  • Modifying Corn Laws
  • Trade Unions - the ban on being able to influence others meant that people themselves chose whether they wanted to be a part of a Union or not
  • Poor relief
  • Lowering taxes

How did the ideas of laissez - faire affect the government?

A

Kept taxes low
Minimised interference
Didn’t help the poor much, left them alone
Didn’t look at a persons circumstance
Didn’t look at improvements in standard of living
Thought that people who depend on the government will be lazy and reliant
The government can’t affect anything in a person, only themselves

How far do you think that laissez - faire dominated government thinking from 1822 - 65?

A

Economic (yes)- Free trade, decrease duties, lower tax
Economic (no) - More dominant under Peel, Corn Laws only repealed in the latter half of the era, may not be so important, Peel brought back income tax
Social(no) - Did interfere with the Factory Act, Money to schools, slavery,
Social(yes) - minimal interference, Public Health Act is permissive, not much in education
