Lab Prep 1 Flashcards
The stroop effect may occur even when the participant is told not to explicitly read the word - why is this?
Even with instuction to not read the word, one will automatically but unintentionally read the word as reading is an automatic process
How is dichotic listening task similar to the ‘Cocktail party effect’
In the dichotic listening task, the participant will have to ‘shadow’ the information they hear in one ear while ignoring information being heard by the other ear. The divided attention of the participant focuses on shadowing that they neglect what has been heard by the other ear. This is similar to the cocktail party effect, in that the person focus their direct attention to the conversation they are engaged in while ignore the background noises such as other conversations, music etc. Moreover, the individual is able to control contents of their consciousness in the cocktail party effect such as averting their attention when their name has been called out. This is similar to in the dichotic listening task where the individual controls their contents of consciousness by being only receptive to stream of information being presented to one ear.
Why
social concept priming tends to trigger automatic behavior consistent with the primed concept such as in this case, the participants were primed to be dyslexic. The participants behaviour changed in accordance and
caused the participant to behave like a person who has dyslexia known to **‘have difficulties to read’. This meant word reading was not processed automatically as it would normally do in the stroop effect. Thus there was no conflict between the automatic process (word recognition) and the intentional process (color recognition). **This was exhibited in experiment 1 and 3 except the fact experiment 3 involved priming as a painter.
