Q

Describe the sensorimotor stage

A

the sensorimotor stage typically lasts until the infant is two years old. Infants learn predominantly through their hand and mouth such as by mouthing, watching and grabbing objects. This is because actions coexist with thoughts. Object permanence is a hallmark where to infants, objects only exist in space and time. In other words, if the object cannot be observed by the infant i.e directly placed in front of them, they do not exist. This suggests egocentrism in thinking whereby, they can only see from one view

Q

Describe the preoperational stage

A

Preoperational stage (2-7years) At this stage, children develop and use symbolic thoughts and mental images, in which separates thoughts from action . Children are able to construct mental solutions to problems when presented. However, children are more likely to be egocentric that older children. This being, they typically see the world from their own perspective and are unable to see reality from others. egthree-mountain task. Centration also places limits in preoperational thoughts where the child focuses on salient feature of object while ignoring other relevant features. Children think literally and are accepting of occasions where there is a change eg. Children took no notice when a member of Wiggles was replaced by another actor.

Q

describe the concrete operational stage

A

In the concrete operational stage (7-12 years), They are able to carry out mental operations and mentally reverse concrete objects and events to it’s original form such as picking the best excuse to make. This is based on their understanding of concept of conservation whereby basic features of object or situations are conserved even when superficial properties change. These children understand transivity which is based on forming a logical conclusion when presented with information. Transivity problems may present two statements such as ab, is c>a. Children at this stage will be able to solve this problem by piecing the disparate sources of information together.
