Lab Practical 4 Flashcards
CN 1
Olfactory - sensory - smell
CN2
Optic - Sensory - vision
CN3
Oculomotor - primarily motor - motor impulses to superior, inferior and medial rectus and inferior oblique muscles of eye, adjust light, focus lens, raise eyelid
CN4
Trochlear - primarily motor - motor impulses to superior oblique muscles that move the eye
CN5
Trigeminal - mixed -
Ophthalmic- eyes, tears, scalp, forehead, upper eye lid
Maxillary- upper teeth, upper gum, upper lip, palate, facial skin
Mandibular- scalp, skin of jaw, lower teeth, lower gum, lower lip. Motor impulses of mastication and muscles of floor of mouth
CN6
Abducens - primarily motor - motor impulses to lateral rectus muscles of eye
CN7
Facial - mixed - taste receptor of anterior tongue. Motor of facial expression, tear and salivary glands
CN8
Vestibulocochlear - sensory
Vestibular branch- equilibrium
Cochlear branch- bearing
CN9
Glossopharyngeal - mixed - pharynx tonsils, posterior tongue and carotid arteries. Motor impulses of salivary glands and pharynx used in swallowing
CN10
Vagus - mixed - motor impulses to speech and swallowing; autonomic motor impulses of viscera of thorax and abdomen
Sensory from pharynx, larynx, esophagus and viscera of thorax and abdomen
CN11
Accessory - primarily motor -
Cranial branch- motor to soft palate, pharynx and larynx
Spinal branch- motor to neck and shoulder
CN12
Hypoglossal - primarily motor - motor impulses to muscles that move the tongue
Olfactory 1 test
Sniff and recognize product
Optic 2 test
Read time on wall clock; identify letters on snellen chart
Oculomotor 3 test
Dropping eyelid, impaired eye movement, dilated pupil
Follow finger without moving head; flashlight in eye to see if pupils contract
Trochlear 4 test
Impaired eye movement
Follow finger and see if I can be rotated
Trigeminal 5 test
Loss of sensation of touch; hot, cold, pain in face; impaired jaw movement
Touch face in areas of branch of the nerve; open/close mouth, move jaw around
Abducens 6 test
Loss of lateral eye movement
Follow finger to test for lateral eye movement
Facial 7 test
Distorted taste on anterior region of tongue; dry eye and mouth; impaired facial muscle expression
Place sugar or salt on tip of tongue; smile and whistle
Vestibulocochlear
Loss of balance/hearing
Walk a straight line; use tuning fork to test hearing
Glossopharyngeal 9 test
Dry mouth; impaired swallowing; impaired taste on posterior tongue
Check ability to swallow and cough
