Lab 3: Behavior of Living Cells Flashcards
what is diffusion?
Movement of molecules from high to low concentrations
What is Osmosis
Diffusion of water molecules through a selectively permeable membrane
What is Solution Tonicity
measure of solutions ability to change shape of cells by affecting cells internal volume water
Isotonic solution (same)
2 solution that have same concentration of dissolved particles + water
Cell will maintain its normal shape and volume
Hypotonic solution (below)
Solution that has less concentration of dissolved particles + greater water than the cell
Water molecules enter cell faster than they leave and cell swells
Water molecules will go from outside to inside
Hypertonic solution (above)
Solution that contains a greater concentration of dissolved particles and a lesser water molecule concentration than the cell
Water molec move out of cell faster than entering = cell shrink
Water flow by osmosis from inside to outside
what happens to RBC shape in hypotonic
increase size, hemolysis occurs
what happens to RBC in hypotonic
decrease size, crenation occur
what is hemolysis
At a certain volume, cell membrane ruptures and contents of RBC are released, leaving fragments behind
what is crenation
Water will leave
Cell shrink and lose shape
which treatment (acetone or heat) will disrupt the lipid component vs. the protein component of the cell membrane?
acetone = lipid component
heat = protein component
Recall that iodine reacts with the polysaccharide starch to produce a blue/black colour: Can
you relate colour change observations to which molecule(s) the dialysis bag is permeable to
Iodine has high concentration of water
- bag will change to blue color
- concentration solution decrease water
starch remained same so iodine wasn’t allowed into bag
- bag was permeable to iodine = diffuse through it
what is a dilute solution
small amount of solute dissolved in the solution.
what is a concentrated solution
large amount of dissolved solute.
