26
Q

Provide the life cycle for plasmodium.

A

1 - Infected human individual
2 - Anopheles fly bites person and ingests gametocytes of Plasmodium falciparum
3 - Gametocytes become gametes and then fertilize
4 - Diploid zygotes accumulate in the mosquito gut
5 - Zygotes encyst in the gut wall and form oocysts
6 - Each oocyst produces many haploid sporozoites
7 - Sporozoites migrate to the salivary glands of the mosquito
8 - Mosquito bites human. Sporozoites invade host liver. Become cryptozoites when in the liver cells, cannot be found by host immune system.
9 - Asexual reproduction occurs here and produces merozoites within the liver. These are released into the bloodstream and infect red blood cells.
10 - RBCs rupture, most parasites killed by WBCs, but some can form gametocytes and restart the cycle.

27
