Provide the life cycle for plasmodium.
- Infected human individual
- Anopheles fly bites person and ingests gametocytes of Plasmodium falciparum
- Gametocytes become gametes and then fertilize
- Diploid zygotes accumulate in the mosquito gut
- Zygotes encyst in the gut wall and form oocysts
- Each oocyst produces many haploid sporozoites
- Sporozoites migrate to the salivary glands of the mosquito
- Mosquito bites human. Sporozoites invade host liver. Become cryptozoites when in the liver cells, cannot be found by host immune system.
- Asexual reproduction occurs here and produces merozoites within the liver. These are released into the bloodstream and infect red blood cells.
- RBCs rupture, most parasites killed by WBCs, but some can form gametocytes and restart the cycle.
