L4b, Monitoring Athlete Workload and Recovery Flashcards
What is external workload? Give examples
- Work that can be measured by outcome
- Frequency, volume, intensity, duration, speed, distance covered etc.
(GPS, throw/kick count etc.)
What is internal workload and what does it determine?
- The relative physiological stress experienced by the athlete
- Determines the adaptation stimulus
(HR, RPE)
What is TRIMP?
Training impulse, change in heart rate reserve
True or false, the relationship between HR and VO2 is linear?
True
Spikes or excessive and rapid increases in training-load have been identified as responsible for?
A large percentage of non-contact soft-tissue injuries
Methods for monitoring recovery: What are perceptual methods?
Psychological assessments e.g., mood state, DALDA, other wellness questionnaires
Methods for monitoring recovery: What are countermovement jumps or RSI?
Ratio of flight time: Contraction time
Methods for monitoring recovery: What are physiological markers used for?
Heart rate variability or heart rate recovery
Methods for monitoring recovery: What are biochemical markers?
Muscle damage= Biomarkers
E.g., creatine kinase, myoglobin, troponin etc.
Methods for monitoring recovery: What are 3 other salivary or blood measurements?
Cortisol, testosterone, glutamine and glutamate
What is the goal of tapering for competition?
Remove fatigue while avoiding detraining
