L2a, Posture and Stability Flashcards
What is stability?
The state of equilibrium of a body
Stability = What?
The balance of Mobility + Control
What is posture?
The mechanical alignments of segments
What forces have the worst impact on the spine?
Shear forces (unaligned forces)
Posture can alter the way we use our accessory muscles and postural muscles. What are accessory muscles used for in posture?
Used to control posture (caused by the overload of postural muscles due to bad posture)
What are characteristics of postural muscles?
Small, type 1 fiber, continuous low-level activation
What are characteristics of mobilizing (mover) muscles and what are they used for in posture?
Big, strong muscles that create movement, require a lot of energy, and are made for short bursts of large-range movement.
What are the effects of poor posture on MSK stability?
Hypoactivity and muscular weakness lead to compensation, which then leads to hyperactive mobilizing muscles and decreased mobility.
What is cervical lordosis?
Forward head posture
What are the prime movers of core flexion and extension
Erector spinae and rectus abdominis
What are the accessory muscles of the core?
Gluteus maximus, hamstring, and iliopsoas
What are two benefits of maintaining good spinal alignment?
- Reduces net moments alongside muscle forces and internal spinal loads
- Ensures that the trunk is rigid
