L15, Rate of Force Development Flashcards
What is dynamic strength index?
The amount of force you can produce over an amount of time
How does muscle-tendon stiffness effect eccentric training?
- Increase in stiffness improves the rate of force transmission to the skeleton
- Increased neural drive and changes muscle inhibition
Name 3 effects that eccentric training produces:
- Increase stiffness of passive component of MTU
- Lower threshold for muscle activation
- Anticipation of loading
What is rate of force development a measure of?
Explosive strength, or simply how fast an athlete can develop force
What is an intervention that improves jumping?
Resistance training methods, including heavy resistance exercises and plyometric exercise, have been shown to improve jumping performance
What are ballistic exercises?
Exercises that accelerate throughout the entire concentric movement
What are the 3 pros of ballistic exercise?
- Superior training for producing greater stimuli
- Superior potentiation effects compared to non-ballistic
- Produce greater force, velocity, power, and muscle activation
What is a con of ballistic exercise?
Significant injury risk if not progressed in the correct way (or if athlete has poor general strength)
What is post tetanic potentiation?
Twitch force is maximal following a brief tetanus (sustained contraction)
What are some potential mechanisms for post activation post performance?
- Lower Ca2+ sensitivity
- Greater myosin activity
(stronger effect in type II fibres)
What are the 2 phases of power training?
- Strength development by increasing cross-sectional area (higher load)
- The rate of fibre discharge
