L36 Evolution and Development 2 Flashcards
Regulatory change
mutation in cis-regulatory region or structural gene could be both considered regulatory because they impact expression of downstream genes
Structural gene mutations that changes body plan by altering regulation of downstream genes
see onenote
Drosphila vs Artemia
Ubx not repressing leg formation in abdomen of Artemia but is repressing leg formation in abdomen of Drosophila - why does it behave differently? Coding region differences.
Distalless (DII)
see onenote
DII gene expressed in limb primordia
Limb primodia = packet of cells that will give rise to legs in adults (indicated by black arrows), they are predetermined to become legs
Impact of Artemia Ubx vs Drosophila Ubx on limb primordial cells
- 3 pairs of limb primordia in WT => 6 legs
- Ectopically expressing Drosophila Ubx => can only just see limb primodia, expression of Distalless much lower (down-regulated, Ubx controls DII expression)
- Artemia Ubx over expressed, can clearly see limb primordia expression but not as bright as WT
- Artemia Ubx and Drosophila Ubx have different function in terms of leg development.
- In the control panel, Artemia Ubx and Drosophila Ubx are both repressing Antp (antenna). Artemia Ubx and Drosophila Ubx have same function in terms of Antp.
Where gene is expressed and function of protein both important

Does this constitute proof?

need more genome sequences and capacity to manipulate genomes e.g. deletion experiments
