L30 Flashcards
What is a microbiome?
complete collection of micro organisms and their genes within a particular environment
what is microbiota?
Individual microbial species in a biome, bacteria, fungi, archaea and viruses
What is the aim of the Human microbiome project?
Finding correlation between microbiome and our health
What does microbiome do for us?
Commensal microbes protects from pathogen
Prevents pathogen from being successful
Competing for nutrients
What are the 4 phyla which dominate human microbiome
Firmicutes
Bacteroidetes
Actinobacteria
proteobacteria
main Function of microbiota in gut?
Creates Short Chain Fatty Acids which modulate our metabolism and affects our defence against pathogens
Other functions of microbiota in gut
Synthesis vitamins
Modulate immune response
alter drug delivery
What are functional foods?
Foods claiming to promote health by changing microbiome
What are probiotics?
Live micro organisms in food eg yoghurt
What are prebiotics?
Ingredient which nourished good bacteria within gut
stimulated growth of probiotics
What are the two good and bad microbe gut species?
Good: Lactobacillus
Bad: Difficile
