L17 Flashcards
What is translation?
Synthesis of proteins by ribosomes using mRNA as a set of instructions
what is the start codon?
AUG
What does tRNA do?
Transfers free amino acids into ribosome for translation
What is the function of Aminoacyl tRNA synthetase?
-tRNA Charging
-Brings corresponding pairs together and joins them to form charged tRNA
What are the 3 stages of transcription?
Initiation, elongation, termination
What is the A site in ribosomes?
Binds aminoacyl tRNA (charged)
What is P site of RNA
Where peptide bonds are made, with exit tunnel at the top for polypeptide
What is the ribosome E site?
-Where uncharged tRNA exits ribosome
What is translation, initation?
-mRNA pass through small subunit until start codon is found
-charged tRNA for start codon binds to P site
-Large ribosomal subunit attaches
What is translation elongtation?
- complementary charged tRNA enters A site
-transfer of amindo acid from P site tRNA onto A forming polypeptide bond
-Uncharged tRNA exits and everything moves down a codon, allow the process to repeat
What is translation termination?
-ribosome reaches stop codon
-polypeptide chain detaches from tRNA and is released
