- Reducing the forces that are striving to maintain the status quo and dismantling the current mindset

- By presenting a provocative problem or event to get people to recognize the need for change and to search for new solutions

involves a process of change in thoughts, feelings, behavior or all three that is in some way more productive through organizational structure and development techniques

establishing the change as the new habit so that it now becomes the “standard operating procedure”

- Without this stage of refreezing it is easy to go back to the old ways
