Kingdom Plantae: evo Flashcards
What is something all plants have in their cell wall?
cellulose
5 benefits for plants moving to land
- more room to spread out
- nothing to eat them
- direct contact with sunlight
- access to CO2
- nutrient rich soil
2 negatives for plants moving to land
- no strutural support
2. drying out (water inside plant gives structural support as well)
4 key derived traits found in plants but not in charophytes
- apical meristems
- alternation of generation (with dependant embryos)
- multicelular gametangia
- sporangia
name of female and male gametangia
female: archegonia
male: antheridia
what is alternation of generation?
Alternation of generation is when every generation you alternate between an adult who is haploid and an adult who is diploid.
-process in which 2 multicellular bodies alternate
What are the stages of alternation of generation in plants?
Sporophyte -> sporangia -> spore -> gametophyte -> gametangia -> gametes (fertilization) -> zygote -> sporophyte
why are land plants called embryophytes?
Because of the dependance of the embryo on the parent plant
meiosis produces … spores
haploid
what do spore walls contain, what does this do?
sporopollenin
- it is resistant to dehydration
what is a spore?
a haploid reproductive cell that can develop into a new organism without fusing with another cell
what are 2 additional derived traits that most land plants have? what is their function?
- cuticle –> to prevent excess water loss
2. stomata –> to perform gas exchange
