Kingdom Fungi Flashcards
What are single and multicell fungi?
single -> yeasts
multi -> hyphae
What is in the cell wall of fungi?
Chitin
What is septate hyphae vs aseptate hyphae?
Septate are hyphae that have sections divded by septums vs aseptate are hyphaes that do not have divisions
what are mycelium?
- interwoven mats of hyphae
- mycelium refers to whole structure, wheres mushroom is only the reproductive structure above ground
Fungi are what type of nutrient cyclers?
decomposers - break down organic material
-essential in most all terrestrial ecosystems
How do fungi reproduce?
By spores. Either sexually (mushrooms) or asexually (mould)
What is a major mutualistic relationship between fungi and plants?
Mycorrhizae.
Fungal structure in the roots of most herbaceous plants.
Benefit to plants:
-fungi retains water around roots
-fungi breaks down nutrients, aiding in nutrient uptake by plant
-fungi offers protection from pests and disease
Benefit to fungi:
-food source from plant (carbohydrates), as fungi are heterotrophes
What is a major mutualistic relationship between fungi and animals?
fungi live in the intestines of animals Benefit to animals: -fungi breaks down nutrients for them Benefit to fungi: -food source
What is a major mutualistic relationship between fungi and algae?
Lichen -> so complete that lichen has own species identification
Benefit to algae:
-fungi provides nutrients, minerals, and water
Benefit to fungi:
-algae produces food (photosynthesis)
What is the general term for fungal infection in animal?
Mycosis
Human uses for fungi
- bio-remediation
- food/bev
- medicine uses
Major ecological roles and biotechnology
- nutrient cyclers
- pull carbon and nitrogen and other elements from organic materials so that other organisms may use them
- without decompsers life would not exist
- mutualists with plants and algae and animals, use these organisms to be able to decompose, as they are heterotrophs
What is biotechnology?
manipulation of organisms or components of organisms to produce useful products
