kidneys Flashcards
location of the kidneys
T12 to L3 lieu on the posterior abdominal wall and retroperitoneal
function of kidneys
filter and secrete waste products from blood and water and electrolyte balance in the body
relations of kidney
adrenal glands sit superior
quadrates lumbrum muscle, diaphragm, and rib 11 and 12 are posterior relations
blood supply to the kidneys
renal arteries coming off the abdominal aorta
renal veins go into inferior vena cava
all through the renal hilum
which kidneys higher and why
left is higher due to kidneys
what is the vasa recta
supplies blood to inner 1/3rd of renal cortex
name structures within the kidney and give function
renal pyramids - triangular shaped
minor calyx- clooects urine from pyramids
and major calyx - urine passes through into the pelvis
renal pelvis - urine collects
renal capsule - membranous protective layer
inner medulla - bulk of nephron structure
renal cortex - contains blood vessels that connect to nephron
origin and course of the ureters
origin - abdomen as continuation of renal pelvis
destination- terminate in pelvic cavity where empty into the bladder
course - descend through abdomen, along anterior surface of psoas major, are retroperitoneal
suprarenal glands location and role and blood supply
superior to the kidneys
posterior to abdomen
retroperitoneal
role - endocrine glands that secrete steroid and catacholimine hormones into the blood
receives blood supply from superior adrenal artery, middle adrenal and inferior adrenal artery
right adrenal vein drains into the inferior vena cava
left adrenal vein drains into the left renal vein
