Kidney Histology Flashcards
Capsule
-fibrous connective tissue capsule (kidney is retroperitoneal)
Medullary ray
-referring to destination
-includes collecting ducts and thin tubules of loop of Henle that appear together as a thin ribbon area. Appear this way because of no brush border and they are very thin
Main component of Cortex
-contain renal corpuscles
-will also see medullary rays
Glomerulus
-Macula densa located near glomerulus/vascular pole (part of DCT that is returning and will eventually go through collecting ducts)
-Juxtaglomerular cells (JGA) near macula densa
-proximal convoluted tubule near urinary pole of glomerulus
Components of outer stripe of outer medulla
-PST (thicker)
-thin tubules of loop
-distal straight Tubules (DST)
-collecting ducts
-vasa recta
Components of Inner stripe of outer medulla
-thin tubules of loop
-DST
- collecting ducts
-vasa recta
Components of Inner medulla
-collecting ducts
-bottom of thin loops of Henle (the turn)
-vasa recta
Convoluted vs. straight tubules
**same thing, but different depending on location
-Convoluted: occur near glomerulus
-Straight: occur away from glomerulus
Distal straight tubule vs. proximal straight tubule
-Distal: lumen present, no brush border
-Proximal: less lumen present, brush border present
