Key concepts: Neural Development Flashcards
3rd week of embryonic development
ectoderm thickens and forms the neural plate
plate folds inwards and forms neural groove
neural folds on either ends come together
at the end of the 3rd week the folds will fuse
4th week embryonic development
at the end of the 4th week the neural folds have completely fused and formed the neural tube, which will become the brain and the spinal cord
primary vesicles
as the neural tube has completely closed, bulges and ends become noticeable
3 bulges are present in the 4th week= primary vesicles
what are the primary vesicles
prosencephalon
mesencephalon
rhombencephalon
end of the tube will form the spinal cord
prosencephalon
eventually become the cerebellum
mesencephalon
eventually become the midbrain
rhombencephalon
eventually become the rest of the brainstem and the cerebellum
label the image of the primary vesicles
secondary vesicles
as the brain continues to develop
2 primary vesicles will subdivide to form secondary vesicles
name the secondary vesicles
telencephalon
diencephalon
mesencephalon
metencephalon
myelencephalon
spinal cord
label the image of the secondary vesicles
prosencephalon divisions
diencephalon
telencephalon
rhombencephalon divisions
metencephalon
myelencephalon
mesencephalon division
doesn’t divide
becomes the midbrain
telecephalon function
cerebral hemispheres
