Joints Flashcards
Classification of Joints
Joints (articulations), structural classifications, functional classifications
Structural classifications
Fibrous, cartilaginous, bony, synovial
Functional classifications
Synarthrosis, amphiarthrosis, diarthrosis/synovial joint
Synarthrosis
Immovable joint;
very strong, there are four types of synarthrotic joints
Amphiarthrosis
Slightly movable joint, more moveable than synarthrosis
Diarthrosis/Synovial joint
Freely movable joint
Four types of synarthrotic joints
Suture, gomphosis, synchondrosis, synostosis
Suture
Only in the skull
Gomphosis
Binds teeth to sockets
Synchondrosis
Cartilage connecting two bones, epiphyses (growing), ribs and sternum
Synotosis
When 2 bones fuse, epiphysis (adult), frontal bones
Synovial joints
Freely movable, at ends of long bones, surrounded by joint capsule (articular capsule)
Surrounded by joint capsule (articular capsule)
Synovial membrane, synovial fluid, articular cartilage
Primary functions of synovial fluid includes
Lubrication, nutrient distribution, shock absorption
Primary functions of articular cartilage includes
Covering articulating surfaces, preventing direct contact between bones
Types of movements at synovial joints
Gliding m, angular m, circumduction, rotational m, special m
*m= movements
Axes of motion
Movement of joints that can be described by the number of axes that they can rotate around.
Monaxial
A joint that permits movement around one axis
Biaxial
A joint that permits movement around two axes
Triaxial
A joint that permits movement around three axes
