What is Shabbat?

Exodus 20:8-10

What does observing the Sabbath form?
It forms part of the Covenant at Sinai
When does Shabbat begin?
Friday night
What do families do to prepare for the Sabbath?
They clean the house and get dressed in nice clothes.
What are lit?
Two Shabbat candles are lit at least 18 minutes before the sun sets.
What is held in the synagogue on Friday evenings?
A special service is held. In Reform Communities both men and women are invited to come however in Orthodox Judaism it is only men who are welcomed to this service.
What happens at the service on Friday?
Special Shabbat prayers are recited.
What prayer is recited over wine in the home?
The Kiddus and a blessing is said over two loves of challah (bread).
Who will attend the synagogue on Saturday morning?
The whole family.
What is the focus of Shabbat?
Spending time together and enjoying a feeling of community.
When does Shabbat end?
When the sun goes down on Saturday.
What does Havdalah mean?
