A

A period of armed conflict and political turmoil between 1642 and 1660

Plotted supporters of Charles I against parliament

Resulted in trial and execution of Charles I

Monarchy replaced by the Commonwealth of England 1649-1653

This was replaced by Oliver Cromwell’s Pretectorate- a form of military dictatorship

In 1660 the monarchy was restored under Charles II

Agriculture- main industry and source of employment

Undyed wool was England’s main export but this was mainly manufactured I the home or small workshops rather then larger factories; often as a supplementary source of income

Some centres of manufacturing had emerged, notably Birmingham and Sheffield metalwork and Chatham for shipbuilding
