Monarchy
A form of gov w a monarch at the head
Constitution
Seer of rules that guides how a country/state or other political organisation works
The Constitution May tell what the branches of the government are and how they work
It may also State the RIGht of citizens
Parliament
A formal conference for the discussion of public affairs
Divine Right of Kings
16-18 century
Believe that the king is given authority directly from God and so has the right to rule absolutely and completely and needs no approval from anyone eg parliament or people
Absolutism
The principle of complete and unrestricted power in government
Tyranny
Cruel and oppressive government or rule
Regent
A person who leads a state because the monarch is too young or incapable of ruling
Commonwealth
Evolved from ‘the common wealth’
System of government which ordinary people of England are cared for
Settlement
the resolution or attempt to find a resolution of an issue of governance
Petition
A formal written request
Typically signed by many people
Appealing to authority in respect of a particular cause
Remonstrance
Strongly worded protest
Prerogative
Exclusive rights of a sovereign (supreme ruler) which are subject to no legal restriction
Parliamentary privilege
Grants certain legal immunities for members of both houses (commons and lords)
Allows them to do duties w our interference from outside of house
Eg freedom of speech and rights of both houses to regulate their own affairs
Privy council
Formal body of advisors to sovereign (supreme ruler esp monarch) of the UK
Membership mainly comprises senior politicians who are current/former members of House of Commons or Lords
Reformation
Religious movement in 16th century
Reforming the Roman Catholic Church- led to formation of Protestant churches
Court
A body of people presided over by a judge/judges or a magistrate and acting as a tribunal in civil and criminal cases
Bedchamber
Furthest room at court from entrance gate
Consists of princes of the blood, Gentlemen of the bedchamber and personal body servants eg Groom of the stool
Catholic
Relating to or belonging to any Catholic Church
Protestant
Relating to or belonging to any Protestant church
Puritan
A member of a group of English Protestants in the late 16th and 17th centuries
Arminian
A group of people with similar beliefs to Catholics
They believe Christ died for all people and not just the elect
Episcopal
A church structure that includes bishops
Scripture
The sacred writing of the Old/New Testaments or both together
Predestination
Belief of Puritans and Protestants
God has put in place already who will receive salvation (rescue from sins and it’s consequences) and who won’t
(Who goes heaven and hell)
Recustants
A person who refused to attend services of the Church of England
Subsidies
A parliamentary grant to the sovereign for state needs
Monopolies
Exclusive control over trade
Tonnage and poundage
Certain duties and taxes levied on imports and exports
Patronage
The support of a wealthy/influential person for someone of lesser wealth/status
Eg the king acts as a patron when he gives titles
Favourite
Eg Buckingham for Charles and James
People important and favourite of monarchy
Often receive lots of patronage and titles
Faction
A group of individuals eg a political party e a common political purpose
Impeachment
Accusation against someone in public office claiming they have acted unlawfully or even treacherously in their conduct while in that office
Holy Roman Empire
Territories in Central Europe that developed during the Early Middle Ages and continued until it’s dissolution in 1806
Habsburg
German princely family
From 1440-1806 they wore the imperial crown of the Holy Roman Empire
Provided rulers for Austria, Spain, Hungary etc
Palatinate
A territory under the jurisdiction (power to make legal judgement/decisions) of a count palatine (a feudal lord having royal authority within a region of a kingdom )
