What conditions can lead to infarction of the bowel?

A

1. Acute arterial occlusion

e.g. Atherosclerosis, Aortic aneurysm, Embolism, Hypercoagulable state (2 to pass)

2. Hypoperfusion of bowel

e. g. Shock, Vasoactive drugs, Dehydration, Cardiac failure (2 to pass)
3. Others
e. g. Systemic vasculitis, Abdominal mass, Volvulus, Radiation, Trauma (2 to pass)

What are the clinical features of ischaemic bowel?

A

Pain. Peritonism. Vomiting. Bloody diarrhoea. Shock. Sepsis.

Which parts of the bowel are most susceptible to ischaemic injury and why?

A

Watershed zones, because they are at the end of the arterial supply.

Splenic flexure, Sigmoid colon, Rectum.
