Ionic Bonding Flashcards

1
Q

Ionic compounds:

A

A substance that forms when one atom donates its electrons to another.
(When two atoms of opposite electrostatic charge bond)
-Occurs between metals and non-metals.

Q

Formation of ionic compounds:

A
  • Metal gives electron to non-metal.
  • Metal becomes positively charged (anion)
  • Non-metal becomes negatively charged (cation)
  • Opposite charges between cation and anion attract and form a bond.

Properties of ionic susbtances:

A
  • High boiling point
  • Brittle
  • Do not conduct electricity in solid state.
  • Conducts electricity in molten/aqueous state.
  • Varying solubilities.

Q

Why are ionic bonds brittle?

A

Impact force that is able to disrupt the ionic lattice makes the rows of cations and anions roll over the other rows. This causes the lattice to break due to like charge repulsion.
