ionic bonding Flashcards

1
Q

what is an ionic bond

A

an electrostatic attraction between oppositely charged positive cations and negative anions. it is usually formed by electron transfer from a metal atom to a non metal.

2
Q

3 features of ionic compounds

A

very high melting and boiling points
soluble in polar solvents (eg water)
only conduct electricity when molten or aqueous

3
Q

why do ionic compounds have such high melting/boiling points

A

it takes a great deal of energy to overcome the strong electrostatic forces of attraction, this can only be achieved at high temperatures

7
Q

why do atoms change size when they become ions

A

the electron cloud becomes smaller or bigger depending on loss or gain of electrons

8
Q

why can many ionic compounds dissolve in water

A

water molecules surround the ions and this can overcome the electrostatic attraction between the ions

11
Q

what does increasing proton number do to the size of the ion

A

smaller as they hold the electrons more tightly

17
Q

why can’t solid ionic compounds conduct

A

the ions are locked in place so not free to move and carry charge

18
Q

why can molten and aqueous ionic compounds carry charge

A

ions are free to move and carry charge
