Investigating diversity Flashcards

1
Q

What is the Genetic diversity within or between species, made by?

A
  • the frequency of measurable or observable characteristics
  • the base sequence of DNA
  • the base sequence of mRNA
  • the amino acid sequence of the proteins encoded by DNA and mRNA.

Q

How would you design appropriate methods to ensure random sampling?

A

Use a random number generator to pick plots on a grid to measure with a quadrat.

Q

What has modern technology allowed us to find out about species diversity?

A

Gene technology has caused a change in the methods of investigating genetic diversity; inferring DNA differences from measurable or observable characteristics has been replaced by direct investigation of DNA sequences.
Knowledge of gene technologies will not be tested.

Q

What is the advantage of courtship behaviour?

A
  • helps recognise the same species
  • helps identify a mate capable of breeding
  • forms a pair bond
  • synchronizes mating

Q

What is a line transect?

A

Line transect - a tape measure is placed along the line and any species which touch the tape measure will be recorded.

Q

What is a belt transect?

A

Belt transect - quadrats are placed along the transect one after another, so that each quadrat is touching

Q

How do you estimate a population size?

A

Capture 10 or 100 of the population
Mark them or tag them and release them
Catch another 10 or hundred and see what percent are the tagged ones
Divide the tagged first by tagged again and multiply by 100
