Biodiversity within a community Flashcards
What scale is biodiversity on?
Biodiversity can relate to a range of habitats, from a small local habitat to the Earth.
What is species richness?
Species richness is a measure of the number of different species in a community.
Can you calculate an index of diversity question?
Students could be given data from which to calculate an index of diversity and interpret the significance of the calculated value of the index.
What limits biodiversity in a community?
- Invasive species
- Farming techniques
- Deforestation
- Urbanisation
What farming techniques limit biodiversity?
Deforestation - loss of habitats
Use of fertilisers/pesticides - pollute local water and harms animals in the area
Irrigation - removes water from an area
What is Biological diversity
‘Biological diversity’ means the variability among living organisms in a given area
What is a habitat?
The environment in which an organism or population of organisms usually lives.
What is a community?
A group of interacting populations of different species living in the same place at the same time.
Define Species richness:
The number of different species in a community
Define index of diversity:
An index giving the relationship between the number of species in a community and the number of individuals in each species.
What would you do with information about the index of diversity?
You can compare the index of the diversity of different places and higher index of diversity indicates a richer community.
What impact does farming have on biodiversity?
- Removal of different types of wildlife in place of fields of one crop for mass production.
- Animals such as livestock are bred for certain purposes which may reduce the diversity of the species
- animals lose habitats and therefore can no longer live and may go extinct
What is arable land?
Arable land is land used to grow crops
