Introduction to the Alimentary System and Anatomy Overview 1 Flashcards
What is the anterior wall of the abdominal cavity?
Abdominal wall muscles
What is the inferior wall of the abdominal cavity?
Pelvic floor muscles
What is the posterior wall of the abdominal cavity?
Lumbar vertebral column
What is the superior wall of the abdominal cavity?
Diaphragm
What is the peritoneum?
A thin (singe-cell thick) serous layer
What does the peritoneum do?
Lines the abdominopelvic cavity and surrounds the organs inside
What are the 2 layers of the peritoneum?
Visceral and parietal
What does intraperitoneal mean? + movement
Connected to the wall by a double layer of peritoneum - not directly connected to the wall
Mobile due to layers of peritoneum
What does retroperitoneal mean? + movement
Directly adhered to muscles on the body wall
No movement
What are omenta?
Double folds of peritoneum passing from the stomach and duodenum to other organs or body wall
What are ligaments?
Varied double layers of peritoneum which span between organs or organs to body
What is a mesentery?
A double fold of peritoneal tissue that suspends the small intestine and large intestine from the posterior abdominal wall
What do mesentaries and omenta contain?
Arterial branches which supply peritonised organs - venous, lymphatic and nerve
What is in the peritoneal cavity?
Peritoneal fluid
What divides the greater and lesser sac?
Epiploic/omental foramen
