Introduction to research methods Flashcards
what is accuracy?
a measure of close the recorded result is to the real vaue
what is precision?
intervals between possible recorded results
what is an example of precision?
a ruler that measures in millimeters is more precise then one that measures in centimetres
what is representative sampling?
a sub sample that accurately reflects the complete data set
what is a reliable method?
provides consistent and accurate results
what is an anomalous result?
a result that differs from other results with which it was expected to be similar
what can be done to prove if a result is anomalous?
repeating the study should show whther it is a ‘real’ result or was cuased by other variables
what is a valid study?
produces a precise, accurate, reliable results upon which conclusions can be drawn
what environmental context is necessary when carrying out an investigation?
appropriate risk management
practical equipment and material required and how to use these safely and correctly
the data to be collected and analysed
what is important about the data being collected and anaylsed form an investigation? (Research methods)
- appropriate apparatus/ instruments to record quantitative measurments
- using appropriate apparatus/ instruments and methodologies to measure abiotic and biotic factors
- selecting the right samlping techniques (pitfall traps, water turbidity, light traps)
- selecting the right statistical anaylsis techniques
what are some exmaples of quantative measurments?
temperature
light
pH
what are some examples of abiotic and biotic factors?
light intensity
humidity
population size
