Introduction Flashcards
What is an infection?
Invasion of a hosts tissues by mircorgnaism and disease caused by microbial multiplication, toxins and the host response
What are some of the enivormental sources of infection?
Water, Food, air and surfaces
What is your mircobiota (commensals)?
Mircorganisms carried on the skin and mucosal surfaces, normally harmless or even beneficial but transfer to other sites can be dangerous
What are the different modes of horziontal transmission?
Contact (direct, indirect and vectors), inhalation (droplets and aerosols) ingestion
What is vertical transmission?
Mother to child, before or at birth, and HIV transmission
What are the stages of infection when caused by a bacteria?
Exposure, adherence, invasion, multiplication, dissemination
What are the factors that determine the level of disease?
Virulence (how likely is an organism to cause disease) , inoculum size and any antimicrobial resistance
What are some of the investigations involved in bacteriology?
Swabs, FLUIDS TISSUES, MIRCOSCOPY, BACTERIAL CELLS, PATIETN CELLS, CULTURE antibiltic supectibility, antigen detection and nucleic acid detection
What are some of the factors involved in virology?
Antigen detection, antibody detection and detecting the viral nucleic acid
