intramolecular forces Flashcards
What is a force?
A force is any kind of push or pull on an object
What is a contact force? List 2 examples
A type of force that requires objects to touch
ex: pressure, friction, air resistance, tension
What is a non-contact force?
A force that can act on objects at a distance
What is an intermolecular force?
A force acting between two or more molecules
What is an intramolecular force?
A force acting within an atom, ion, or molecular
What does Coulomb’s law state that describes intramolecular forces? (2)
1) The charges in an atom or molecular attract if they are different. Attraction is greater with higher charges
2) Charges on an atom push apart if they are the same
Why do electrons stay a certain distance away from the nucleus?
Otherwise, protons and electrons would crash into each other because of the attraction of their charges (Coulomb’s law)
