Types of liver abscesses?
A
Pyogenic, echinococcal, amebic.

Dx and tx of amebic abscess?
A
Dx Entamoeba histolytica Ag or PCR.
Tx with 10 days of Flagyl.

Dx and tx of echinococcal abscess?
A
Dx indirect hemagglutination (*IHA) titer for E. granulosus and ELISA for E. multilocularis.
Tx with antihelminthics. Excise if sx-ic or secondarily infected. Epi if anaphylaxis.

Most common cause of pyogenic liver abscesses?
A
- biliary obstruction (stone vs malignancy) - E. coli
- diverticulitis, IBD, perf appy - polymicrobial usually

Complication rate for appendectomy in perforated appendicitis?
A
2x as high compared to NOM.
