- qualitative research can help quantitative researchers to generate new and interesting research questions and hypotheses

- method of data generation and collection
- considered a professional conversation - Kvale 1996

What are structured interviews?
A
- set of schedule questions which you can’t deviate from
- each participant receives exactly same question
- NOT common in qualitative data collection

What are unstructured interviews?
A
- interviewer uses at most ‘aide memoir’ - notes to jog memory
- more like a conversation
- open ended questions- difficult to carry out as needs experienced interviewer

- most common for collecting qualitative data
-cover duration of 30 min to no more than an hour - based on semi-structured interview guide
- flexible while maintaining research guidelines

- understand topic
- develop outline of questions you are going to ask
- be able to use all recording equipment correctly
