Interview Prep Flashcards
Why do you want to work as a swim instructor?
I would love to work as a swim teacher because I really enjoy working with kids. I have always loved to teach and explain things to beginners. I love that with kids teaching is a fun and encouraging process. I think swimming is an important life skill and I want to help children feel safe and confident in the water. I did get the chance to assist teaching a class and found it very enjoyable, and I was able to play to my strengths.
How can you ensure the safety of students within the context of our swimming pool?
I do have a certificate in first aid but when it comes to prevention I would make sure to always supervise, keeping an eye out for each and every child I’m responsible for. I would never rush the children, I’d be sure to teach them the necessary skills to stay safe in the water before asking them to swim. And I would also enforce the no running on wet tiles rule.
How do you motivate your students to learn?
To motivate the children I would probably play some of the games you do here. I would gently encourage the children and celebrate with them when I see progress. And for children who are a bit more apprehensive, I’d give them smaller activities that are less overwhelming and confusing.
Are you comfortable teaching students of various ability levels?
Yes, I’m quite adaptable and I find your lesson plans easy to follow.
How would you navigate angry parents?
Well, I’d stay calm and address their concerns respectfully and um, I’d familiarize myself with Carlile’s policies so I can answer any questions they might have.
Describe some skills you’d use to succeed in this position.
I think vigilance, communication or teaching skills, and enthusiasm are all very important to swimming instruction.
What is your preferred clientele to work with?
I think I would prefer to teach younger children, say preschool or lower primary, because they are always so eager to learn and to have fun. Because I love to teach and help people, I prefer the beginner levels. Be that as it may, I would be happy with any level I am assigned to.
What would you do if one of your students was afraid of water?
I would help them build a positive association with water by making it a playful lesson. I would be patient and gentle with them whilst slowly introducing them to water. For example I might get them to touch the water, maybe splash, and hold the rain bucket over their head if they are ready.
How do you assist experience swimmers to improve their overall skills? Which steps would you take?
I would watch to assess their technique and give feedback. I would also offer them some training drills.
If a student doesn’t respect your authority as their instructor, how do you navigate this?
I would stay calm and set expectations.
How long have you been swimming?
I learnt to swim when I was very young so I’m not sure what age I was. At the moment I have a fitness passport so I can visit swimming pools to work on my own swimming.
Tell me about yourself.
Well, with relevance to this job, I love teaching, I love people, I have volunteering experience leading children, I have a first aid certificate and I would love to become a swim teacher. Other than what qualifies me for this job, I love singing and writing.
Are you a patient person?
Yes I’m an empathetic personality so patience hasn’t really been an issue for me when working with others.
Do you like working with kids?
Yes.
What is your method for assessing a new student’s swimming ability and tracking their progress over time?
I would look to see what strokes and skills they have already fully learnt, and place them where they can grow and be challenged.
