INTERVIEW: Max Bai Flashcards
What does he study?
Animalist and mechanistic traits that people associate with certain races
How did he create this study?
Learned about dehumanization (how black ppl are associated with animals) and east Asians are not
- But they still experience dehumanization, so he figured it was an issue with the framework
How does he think the mechanization stereotype arised in north American context?
How black and Asian people came to the society and became integrated
(ex. slavery- do work “animals” do
VS
Factory workers - do repetitive work like machines)
Also stereotype Asian ppl are good at math
SO IT FOLLOWS THE ROLES IN NORTH AMERICA WE HAVE DESIGNATED FOR THESE GROUPS
How do Asian people also perpetuate the stereotype?
Some Asian families have less emotional homes then white/black families
Asian people also sometimes expect high things of their children
What does he hope the field goes more into?
How people develop these stereotypes from a racial minority perspective
What is he interested in looking into?
How peoples minds work to make racial associations.
Ex. a liberal sees a racially ambiguous conservative (they will perceive them to have darker skin)
How does he think we can use AI in the future?
Chat GPT or AI might be better to get more objective perspectives
But not as good for subjective opinions, that might be subject to social baises (ex. what should this persons jail time be?)
