INTERVIEW: Kate Ratliff Flashcards
What are her research questions about?
How to educate ppl about bias most effectively (implicit bias)
- Want to keep defensiveness low
- But making sure ppl know they are accountable for the biases they have
What does she want ppl to take away from the IAT test?
- Learn about implicit bias
- Good ppl have biases of their societies (even if they don’t want to)
-Bias is all our problem
What is the misconception: “The IAT measures the unconcious”
IDEA: IAT is a window to attitudes and stereotypes that ppl don’t know they have
BUT: ppl probs do have some sense into their answers (even if never thought about it, or don’t wanna think about)
- But not fully unconscious
What role does the IAT have in broader communities?
Education,
ppl have this uncomfortable experience, but it can push self awareness
Does the IAT predict behaviour?
So many contextual things to consider
(question needs more nuance)
What is implicit bias?
Attitudes and stereotypes that are spontaneous / automatic responces to stimuli
We associate traits(good) with stimuli / objects (race)
What can predict defensiveness?
- When feedback contradicts what they self report (ex. racist when reported not biased)
- When they prefer the culturally dominant group
- Also ppl who are more defensive in general
How can we cut away that defensiveness?
- Framing implicit bias as a cultural phenomenon instead of personal (doesn’t really help tho)
- Still working on it
- Some ppl aren’t defensive, but guilt (more likely to try change behaviour)
Interesting direction she things IAT is being used in?
Looking at personal vs cultural phenomenon (ppl vs situations)
What does she hope there is progress on in next 10 years?
Where individual subtle biases fit into systemic / structural racism
What is the benefit of seeing this from different perspectives
