INTERVIEW - Dietrich (Distance and Race) Flashcards
What motivated Dietrich in his research?
How people move in a 3D space, and nonverbal cues (and how they impact the avoided person)
What was the motivation behind his actual research?
His school had a 24/7 camera, and with it you can see various social interactions unfolding
Met with a teacher friend who recommended a student who was interested in sidewalk research (then the study was born)
What things did he have to consider when setting up this study in the field?
- Hiring actors to participate
- selected streetcorners (how to think about if neighborhood is racially diverse) (and if they had cameras)
- Demographic of pedestrians (had someone recording these real time, ex white, mid 40s)
- Switched this later to black, and non-black (cuz they’re trying to see a difference with white vs black) (plus a lot of work for one person)
Why can a four inch difference matter (when walking on the street)?
For those being avoided, it starts to have an effect on how ppl understand themselves in relation to others.
How is he going forward with this study?
A version of the same study but in VR
Not as based IRL, but easier to see distance
Can also control the demographic of the people
