What is the cell cycle? What are the two main phases?
highly ordered sequence of events that takes place in a cell
resulting in division of the cell and genetically identical daughter cells
two main phases - interphase and mitotic division
What is interphase?
the growth period between division
the cell spends the majority of its time in this phase
carries out normal metabolic functions such as producing enzymes of hormones
What are the main processes during interphases to prepare for mitosis?
DNA is replicated and checked for errors in the nucleus
protein synthesis
mitochondria grow and divide
chloroplasts grow and divide
What is the first growth phase of interphase (G1)?
proteins from which organelles are synthesised are produced and organelles replicate
the cell increases in size
What is the S phase?
it is the synthesis phase
DNA replicated in the nucleus
What happens in the G2 phase?
cell continutes to increase in size
energy stores are increased
duplicated DNA is checked for errors
