What causes tuberculosis?
bacteria
destroys lung tissue and supresses the immune system, so the body is less able to fight off other diseases

What causes HIV/AIDS? (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome)

targets T helper cells
gradually destroys the immune system
What causes influenza?
virus
kills cilliated epithelial cells in the gaseous exchange system
increases risk of pneumonia
causes death in young children and elderly often
How is influenza classified?
e.g. HxHy
classified by proteins on their surface
mutates often, so immunity is difficult to build up, as antigens change
What causes malaria?
protocista plasmodium
spread by bites of female Anopheles mosquitos
How is malaria spread?
Plamodium reproduce in the female mosquito
the female needs to take two blood meals to provide her with prtoein before she lays her eggs
this is when Plasmodium is passed to people
What effect does malaria have on the body?
Plasmodium invades erythrocytes, liver and even the brain
What is ring worm caused by?
fungus
grey-white, crusty, infectious circular ares on the skin
antifungal creams can cure it
What is athlete’s foot caused by?
a fungus
a form of human ring worm
digest moist warm skin between toes
causes cracking and scaling
may become itchy and sore
